PURPOSE
The goal of the IAM campaign is to organize racial justice-champions from Washington Permanente Medical
Group to recruit and develop the next generation of historically underrepresented minoritized (URM)
healthcare leaders by creating a state-wide, multidisciplinary network of racial justice-oriented clinician
mentors through engaging, training and coaching clinicians
OUR MENTORS
Over a three-month period physician-assistants, midwives, and physicians met in small groups to study
prespecified materials on racism and mentoring. By engaging with curriculum, discussing content, and
reviewing supplemental materials clinicians were prepared to participate in immediate opportunities to
speak before, and/or mentor URM pre-health professional school mentees.
WPMG IAM CAMPAIGN
CAMPAIGN DEVELOPMENT
To create a supportive mentoring structure at KP, three Kaiser Permanente physicians studied community
organizing for 10 weeks through the Wisconsin Leadership Development Academy. As a result, these leaders
designed the Campaign for Inspired Allied Mentors (IAM), to recruit and coach 65 clinicians by August 31,
2021.
CAMPAIGN PROGRESS
By September 30, 2021, the campaign succeeded in retaining 66 clinicians who participated in varying degrees
of learning sessions. Clinicians were organized into 14 teams and met 6 times over a period of three months.
The IAM campaign expects to train one cohort of clinicians per year and to continue recruiting program alumni
to engage in mentorship opportunities.
MENTORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
HCCP students who have completed at least steps 1 and 2 of HCCP programs are matched with available IAM mentors for 1:1 mentorship. Matching prioritizes specialty, interests, location, and other impactful and important variables.
